DISCOVER LOFT d'O
This unique monastery loft is located in the heart of the rich history of 'The Great War'.
Oscar Dambre, a war-volunteer, was the first to portray the well-known story and the brotherly love
of the Van Raemdonck Brothers, even before their bodies were found.
The brothers Eward and Frans Van Raemdonck, born in Temse, were also war volunteers from
the same line regiment as Oscar. In the night of 25 to 26 March 1917, their company was deployed
to conduct a raid on Stampkot in Steenstrate. This old oil mill has been part of Ypres since 1977.
After the attack, the brothers would meet again at the emergency bridge over the Ypres canal.
Only Edward showed up. He did not want to leave his brother Frans behind and went back
to the no man's land. Nineteen days later, the brothers were found dead in each other's arms
(according to the myth).
Controversy surrounding the death of the Van Raemdonck Brothers continued well into the 20th century.
The 'Flemish' and 'Belgian' versions of the story contradict each other. Historian and mayor of Temse
Luc De Ryck researched the story and wrote it down in the book 'Back to no man's land'.
This story, in which the term 'brotherly love' is certainly applicable, was first described by Oscar Dambré in
the newspaper 'Ons Vaderland'. Even before the Van Raemdonck brothers' death was certain.
In his contribution, Oscar Dambré already foresaw a tragic ending: 'They would not return one
without the other, even if they had to die in each other's arms'. It is therefore obvious
that the name LOFT d'O refers to Oscar Dambré.
